United Way 2018 Allocations
The funds raised by United Way of Walla Walla and Columbia County are invested in local programs to attack the very real challenges that people face in our community.
Here is where those dollars are working.
Health
Counseling Services (Catholic Charities): $19,000 to employ a licensed mental health professional providing counseling services for low-income individuals of all ages whose needs are not covered by Medicaid.
ABC & CB Programs (Friends of Children of Walla Walla): $14,000 to assist with ABC mentoring program at Walla Walla and College Place schools, matching students with adult friends; and CB mentoring program matching children with safe, caring adults who commit to meet weekly for at least a year.
Grief Support Programs (Walla Walla Community Hospice): $13,000 to address the needs of those grieving the loss of a loved one through individual counseling, support groups, and a grief camp for children.
Recreation and Summer Camp for Individuals with Disabilities (Walla Walla Valley Disability Network): $10,000 to provide year-round recreational programs and a summer camp, increasing social opportunities and inclusion for individuals with disabilities.
Domestic Violence Shelter (YWCA of Walla Walla): $15,000 to assist in providing an emergency shelter for women and children leaving domestic violence, helping women and children to heal and take steps toward a safe, stable life.
Education
Adult Literacy (Blue Mountain Action Council): $6,000 to support tutors who are matched with adults seeking to improve their economic, academic, and personal lives through improved literacy.
Pro Bono Services (Blue Mountain Action Council): $10,000 to support the only program in our community that offers free civil legal advice and connections to local attorneys for low-income residents.
Valle Lindo Academic Fun Club and Summer Programs (Children’s Home Society of Washington): $25,000 to provide elementary children with a fun, safe, high-quality after-school homework program and summer camp.
Triple Point (Children’s Home Society of Washington): $2,000 to help local LGBTQ+ teens thrive by providing education, information, and support in a safe, accepting environment.
Child Care (YWCA of Walla Walla): $12,500 to support low-income children by providing safe, high-quality child care programs at My Friends’ House and the Adventure Club.
Varsity Letters and Scholarships for Volunteerism (United Way of Walla Walla County): $3,000 in scholarships and varsity letters awarded to students who complete 145 hours of community service in 12 months.
Summer Camp for Children in College Place (United Way of Walla Walla County in partnership with City of College Place): $20,965 to provide a safe, fun environment for children in College Place.
Adopt-a-Student (United Way of Walla Walla County): $4,298 to remove financial barriers preventing students from fully participating in elective, co-curricular, and athletic opportunities.
Financial Stability and Basic Needs
Emergency Social Services (Helpline): $21,000 to assist staff and volunteers in connecting people struggling to meet their basic needs with community resources needed to achieve stability. The funding also supports utility assistance to prevent shut-offs and free/discounted bus passes.
Community-based Employment Services (Lillie Rice Center, Inc.): $9,500 to encourage employers to hire persons with developmental disabilities and to assist job seekers in identifying their unique capabilities and develop new skills to gain long-term employment in our community.
Emergency Services (The Salvation Army Walla Walla): $5,000 to help vulnerable and disadvantaged members of our community meet their basic human needs for food, shelter, and safety.
Emergency Warming Center (United Way of Walla Walla County and community partners): from November 1 to February 28, when our local shelters are full, the Walla Walla Emergency Warming Center opened its doors to adults seeking shelter.
Grace Women and Children’s Shelter (United Way of Walla Walla County and community partners): supporting a temporary shelter for women with children while Christian Aid built their facility.
